Electric Power Steering for Land Rover: The complete guide to upgrading your Defender, Series 2/3, or Range Rover Classic.
Electric power steering for Land Rover: rediscover the pleasure of driving without altering your vehicle
Driving an old Land Rover is a pleasure... until the first parallel parking attempt. Without assistance, steering a Defender, a Series 2/3, or a Range Rover Classic can quickly become a physical exercise, especially at low speeds or with big tires. Good news: there's no need to sacrifice the authenticity of your vehicle to improve comfort. Our adaptable electric power steering kits allow you to modernize the steering of your Land Rover while preserving its original character.
In this article, we review the available solutions for each model, explain how it works, and help you choose the kit that is suitable for your vehicle.
Why equip your Land Rover with electric power steering ?
Vintage Land Rovers (Series 2, Series 3, first-generation Defender, Range Rover Classic) were never designed for modern steering comfort. As a result, drivers often experienced tired arms, difficult maneuvers, and a driving experience that could discourage even the most passionate enthusiasts. Electric Power Steering (often referred to as EPS) meets three very concrete expectations of owners of older 4x4 vehicles:
- Daily comfort: steering while stopped or at low speeds no longer requires effort.
- Reversibility: Unlike hydraulic conversion, our electric kits can be installed without soldering or cutting the original column on most models, allowing you to revert back if needed.
- Reliability: no pump, no hose, no hydraulic fluid to monitor, so no risk of leaks and virtually no maintenance.
Each kit comes with an adjustable potentiometer, which allows you to adjust the assistance level according to your driving style, the weight of the vehicle, or the width of the tires. In case of an electrical failure, a built-in safety feature allows you to instantly switch back to classic mechanical steering, without losing control.
Our electric power steering kits by model
Electric power steering kit for Land Rover Defender
Specifically designed for the Defender, this kit includes a complete electrically assisted steering column. No welding or cutting of the original column is necessary: you receive a ready-to-install column, allowing you to keep the original one aside. Only a slight cut in the firewall is required to accommodate the electronic unit, which becomes invisible once the plastics are reassembled. Allow 4 to 6 hours of labor for a simple installation, accessible to a skilled DIY enthusiast.

Electric power steering kit for Land Rover Series 2
The Series 2 has the particularity of having a one-piece steering column, making a simple cutting/welding impossible due to lack of space. Our kit circumvents the issue with a new steering worm gear, bearings and seals, for a complete renovation of the steering box in addition to adding power assistance. The electric unit is then inserted from inside the vehicle, onto the new splined shaft. Expect an installation time of 8 to 9 hours, including assembly.

Electric power steering kit for Land Rover Series 3
For the Series 3 (88" or 109", left-hand or right-hand drive), the kit also includes a complete power steering column. Please note, this model requires some additional modifications: relocating the wiper motor and cutting the dashboard. Nothing too challenging, but it's something to plan ahead for before ordering.

Electric power steering kit for Range Rover Classic
This kit was custom-developed for the Range Rover Classic (88", 100", and 109", LHD or RHD). Just like with the Defender, no welding or cutting of the original column is required: you install a new, ready-to-fit column that can be reversed at any time.

New: Electric power steering kit for Land Rover 101.
The latest addition to the range, this kit was designed for the Land Rover 101, a model that is still not well covered by market solutions. It follows the same philosophy as the other kits: installation without altering the vehicle, adjustment potentiometer, and mechanical safety backup.

How does an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system work ?
The principle is simple yet remarkably effective: a potentiometer measures the force applied to the steering column, and an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) controls an electric motor that assists this movement, based on the selected setting and sometimes the speed of the vehicle. The result is strong assistance during maneuvers, and a firmer and more precise steering once the vehicle is in motion on the road.
The entire system is partially housed under the dashboard, without any visible modification to the interior once the installation is complete. The original aesthetics of your Land Rover remain intact.
