Are EZ electric power steering kits speed-sensitive?
At EZ, we prefer to talk about a load-sensitive system rather than speed-sensitive. All our EZ electric power steering kits operate on this principle, similar to many hydraulic systems.
How does load sensitivity work?
At low speeds, the handlebar feels heavier and the torsion bar reaches its maximum flex. The torque sensor detects this torsion, and then the ECU automatically calculates the maximum level of assistance.
As speed increases, the steering naturally becomes lighter. The torsion bar twists less, which automatically reduces the assistance calculated by the ECU.
The role of the pulse generator
The pulse generator is an additional feature, useful but not always essential. With a harness equipped with a potentiometer, the system uses a simulated speed signal, manually adjustable.
By turning the potentiometer counterclockwise, you decrease the simulated speed and achieve maximum steering assistance.
Connecting to an electronic speed pulse
In some cases, it is possible to connect the ECU to an electronic speed pulse. However, this does not necessarily improve the steering feedback (sensitivity, feel, feedback).
For this setup, a specific harness is available. It is also possible to convert a potentiometer-equipped harness into a speed pulse-compatible harness. Simply cut the blue wire between the controller and the ECU, and then send the pulse through the same wire.
Reverse conversion: speed pulse → potentiometer
Conversely, a harness designed for an electronic speed pulse can be converted into a potentiometer-equipped harness.
