What is power steering?

In a car, power steering refers to a steering assistance system for the driver. This technology, developed in 1876 but commercialized in 1951, is intended to reduce the effort required when turning the wheels to facilitate maneuvers, especially at low speeds.

Currently, there are several types of power steering assistance available on the automobile market, including:

- Hydraulic power steering (1951)

- Hydroelectric power steering (1990s)

- Electric power steering (early 2000s)

Hydraulic power steering was the most commonly installed steering system by manufacturers between 1951 and the 2000s. Since then, automobile manufacturers have turned to electric power steering for technological reasons (variable assistance with speed, parking assist, etc.).

The primary advantages of power steering are to facilitate driver maneuvers and ensure smooth driving.
Electric power steering systems now equip 80% of the global automotive fleet, but some manufacturers have developed electric power steering kits for vintage cars, 4x4s, and all models not equipped with this technology. These kits comply with road traffic regulations. The electric power steering kit consists of:

- A column or half column with an electric motor
- Complete wiring
- An ECU
- A controller
- A potentiometer or speed sensor
- A converter or battery depending on the vehicle's voltage

It can be installed in a few hours (6 to 10 hours) depending on the vehicle model.

On a Porsche 911, the installation of the electric power steering kit can be completed in less than 6 hours due to its simplicity and accessibility.

However, on a Lotus, the installation takes almost 2 days because removing the dashboard is necessary to access the column.
